Small States and Territories – big impact?
Analysing Neutrality, Multilateralism and Peace-related Practices – and the Role of NUSCT Universities
The Åland University of Applied Sciences in cooperation with the Observatory of History, Political Science, International Relations and European Union of the University of Andorra and the Åland Islands Peace Institute, welcome abstracts for papers for the “NUSCT International Conference” which will be held in Mariehamn, Åland Islands, 19-21 May, 2027.
Theme
Small states and territories have historically played important roles in international diplomacy, peacebuilding processes and multilateral cooperation. The conference will explore how traditions of neutrality and international engagement have allowed them to contribute to conflict resolution and international dialogue, potentially beyond their geographical size.
The conference aims to bring together researchers working in the fields of History, Political Science, International Relations, European Studies and Peace studies in order to examine the contributions of Small States and Territories to peace-related practices amidst the increasingly intricate Conflicts of the 21st century.
By combining historical and contemporary perspectives, political diplomacy, European and international relations, the discussions aim to address both longstanding tensions and emerging challenges in a rapidly evolving global context. By analyzing phenomena at local, regional, and international levels, the conference will provide a dedicated platform for interdisciplinary debate, encouraging critical reflection on how peace-related practices can contribute to lasting Peace and social cohesion, while navigating the complexities of modern global politics.
In line with this theme, the call welcomes presentations on the following topics:
- Small States and soft power: leveraging sovereignty for global influence – e.g. Multilateral diplomacy and international organisations (UN, OSCE, EU, NATO), Parliamentary diplomacy, mediation and conflict resolution.
- The roots of peace: Cultural Heritage, Identity and Social Cohesion – e.g. Peace education and the role of universities fostering a Democratic culture as a tool for peacebuilding, Community cohesion and social resilience.
- Neutrality, Neutralization, Demilitarization and its Global Implications – e.g. Sovereignity, neutrality in international law, non-aligment, security and foreign policy strategies.
Roundtable discussion: “The role of NUSCT UNIVERSITIES in peace studies: how to promote dialogue and lasting peace. Reflections and futures challenges”, to explore how academic networks can contribute to promoting peace, tolerance and cooperation.
