"My internship at the Åland UAS was really great. A beautiful place, sunny all summer and full of nice people. And on top of all, I worked on the collision avoidance on the project of Åland Sailing Robots, which aim to design the world's first autonomous sailing robot that cross the Atlantic Ocean. Working here was a very good experience for me."

Research & projects
The Åland University of Applied Sciences leads or participates in a number of development projects. Åland UAS has the role of initiator and driving force in various projects financed by the EU or by the Åland autonomy authorities.
A few of the ongoing projects are presented in the following.
The project OnBoard-Med - Harmonization of on Board Medical Treatment, Occupational Safety and Emergency Skills in Baltic Sea Shipping aims at developing refreshment and e-learning education programmes in the Central Baltic area.
The shipping industry has become multinational, therefore recognizing problems in education cannot easily be solved on a national level. A cross-border approach is needed to tackle the needs on the labour market, higher risks and new technology.
Throughout the project life span, the courses will be built, piloted, tested and regularly improved in collaboration with the target groups. The project will result in harmonized and improved courses and skills and those will hopefully become the standard in the field.
The lead partner in the project is Turun ammattikorkeakoulu and the other participants are Estonian Nautical School, Riga Stradins University in Latvia,
Latvian Maritime Academy and Åland UAS
The working team on Åland consists of Anna Lundberg, Bengt Malmberg, Ronny Eriksson, Lena Nyman-Wiklund, Laura Nieminen and Linda Eriksson.
The project period is from september 2016 until mars 2019.
Åland Sailing Robots
"The goal is to accomplish a transatlantic crossing by a fully autonomous sailing boat". Robotic sailing has the potential to become a cost efficient and environmentally friendly alternative for marine research, surveillance and certain transports.
The project Åland Sailing Robots was initiated by the Åland University of Applied Sciences in January 2013. Åland UAS is committed to continuously be a world leading educational provider in seafaring, shipping, marine and electro-technical engineering, computer technology as well as in business administration. The spin off from the project provides knowledge and competencies to our business partners as well as to our students in all of our study programmes.
The goal is to develop an autonomous mobile marine research platform, using wind and solar energy. This is a resource efficient future option for different types of marine research. The aim is to further develop Åland Islands' competency and innovation regarding unmanned and autonomous shipping and green technology.
The project Marine Research Platform is planned for 2016-2018. The platform will be evaluated for marine sensor measurements and harbor porpoise monitoring in the Baltic Sea. In addition to Åland University of Applied Sciences it involves marine research expertise and private companies. The marine research platform project is partly funded by the European Regional Development Fund.
Business Lab aims to establish a positive view of entrepreneurship and actively provide companies tools to start their businesses and shorten the time from concept to commercialization. In addition to an office and an entrepreneurial atmosphere companies accepted to Business Lab are offered access to a first-class partner program that includes guiding from leading actors in law, accounting, sales and marketing strategy.
The combination of energetic entrepreneurs and the expertise available in the network make the Business Lab a valuable concept within Åland's economy and also highlights Åland University of Applied Sciences as a major source of entrepreneurship. Business Lab has been an ongoing project since 2014 and it is funded by the European Regional Development Fund ERUF and ESF. Companies can apply to Business Lab twice a year.
