The house of the author

The Nobel prize winner for literature in 1955 was Halldór Laxness (1902-1998). The house of the author where he and his family lived for more than fifty years has been opened to the public as a museum. Nothing has been changed since he and his family lived there. Gljúfrasteinn, the house of the poet, is situated just outside Reykjavik city. At the museum you can watch multimedia presentation of the poet’s life and his work. Walking paths lie around in the beautiful surroundings and visitors can walk the same paths the poet did. Laxness was brougth up there so these surroundings were also his playground as a child. Laxness was very efficient poet and he wrote novels, plays and a lot of articles. Some of his work has been written in more than 40 languages.

M.P. proposes changes regarding the presidency of Iceland

Pétur Blöndal, a member of parliment for the conservative party, has presented a bill in the Icelandic parliament regarding the presidency of Iceland.  He proposes that Icelanders abolish the office of president and that current duties will be filled by current ministers.  If this bill will be passed, this change will take effect when current term for the president of Iceland ends in 2007.

Blöndal’s bill may be seen as the reaction to the events in June last, when the current president of Iceland, Mr. Ólafur Ragnar Grimsson, rejected for the first time in Iceland’s 60 years history as a republic, to sign a law that had been passed by the Parliament.
